-Well OSM, it appears that it’s now nearly 19 years since I started contributing to you. Those contributions have waxed and waned over the years but I’m still here – as are you. My initial major contribution, 15 or 16 years ago, was to drive every street in my town to give it a start on the map. Next, I mapped hundreds of kilometres of desert tracks. Then came mapping historical communication routes which saw me hiking through the gorge systems where I live (northern New South Wales). What’s next I wonder. Happy birthday!

-Thanks to everyone that has been serving the most up-to-date maps that exists. Been using osmand~ for almost as long and it never fail me. Perfect for offline adventures abroad. I’m field mapping with Vespucci and offline mapping using the homepage. Lately I’ve learned to make background imagery with OpenDroneMap/OpenAerialMap. I would donate money if there were no middle hands taking part of it. Two anectotes from Sweden; On a work trip, we got stuck on the road after an accident. The mobile network was overloaded so no one could check google maps. I pick up my phone and show an alternate route using the offline maps. Winter holiday, and I’m driving to our airbnb cottage in the wilderness. Arrive late and it is already pitch black; I have no mobile coverage. Luckily K9 mail were auto-downloading incoming mails, so it had the last message from out host with GPS coordinates and instructions where to find the key. Saved by offline maps again! 🙂

You had to learn what real friendship means, sometimes the hard way. It’s a big world out there, and it took you some time to realize what your place in it was. Now, as you reach this milestone, turning 20, you are in many ways still on this journey of self-discovery. Take it from someone more than twice your age: embrace that journey, there is no final destination. Keep choosing your friends carefully, my friend, and you will be fine. I’ll raise a glass on your big day! I know you’ll have other places to be on your big day, but you will always feel close, wherever you are. Godspeed.

Thanks to the OSM project and the struggle of local communities in Colombia, our official cadastral authority, IGAC, is publishing its geographical products under an open licence, something that was unthinkable 20 years ago.
